You have the resources, the experience, and every reason to believe you’re going to win.

Now imagine getting swept in four straight games by a team spending less than half of what you’re spending.

Welcome to the 2026 National League Championship Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Milwaukee Brewers. And while I’m certainly not a professional baseball analyst by any means, I am a student of leadership, culture, and what makes organizations successful.

What unfolded in this series is something I believe every business owner should pay attention to, because having the best players doesn’t necessarily mean you have the best TEAM.

THE NUMBERS DON’T LIE.

The Dodgers entered the postseason with an adjusted payroll of approximately $339 million.

The Brewers? Approximately $146 million. That’s a $193 million difference between two organizations competing for the same championship.

The Dodgers had names like Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, and Freddie Freeman, while the Brewers had a roster that most casual baseball fans probably couldn’t name five players from.

Yet Milwaukee won 103 regular-season games, the most in Major League Baseball, and still entered the series as the underdog. Then they went out and swept the Dodgers in four straight games.

Think about that for a minute. The team spending nearly $200 million less just outperformed one of the most talented and expensive rosters in professional sports.

The scoreboard didn’t care about the payroll. It cared about the results.

And that brings me to business.

ARE YOU BUILDING A TEAM OR JUST COLLECTING TALENT?

One of the biggest mistakes I see leaders make is believing their next big hire will solve all their problems. If they could just find that superstar salesperson, experienced operations manager, or someone from a larger organization, everything would finally fall into place.

I’m definitely a huge believer in hiring talented people. But here’s what I’ve learned: A collection of talented individuals is not the same thing as a high-performing team. You can have the most experienced people in your industry and still build an organization that underperforms. Talent without alignment creates friction. Talent without accountability creates entitlement. And talent without leadership creates confusion.

At Atlas, we’ve spent years developing our culture around five core values: Ambitious, Teamwork, Learners, Accountable, and Safety. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned along the way is that the most talented individual isn’t always the most valuable teammate. Sometimes it’s the person who consistently shows up, takes ownership, helps others succeed, and puts the mission ahead of their ego. Those are the
people who build championship organizations, and those are the people leaders need to recognize, develop, and retain.

THE LEADER SETS THE STANDARD.

One of the things I loved about the Brewers was the identity their manager, Pat Murphy, established. Following the series, he spoke about the Dodgers having Hall of Famers while Milwaukee had a bunch of gamers. I love that mentality because he wasn’t suggesting talent doesn’t matter. He was describing a group of individuals who believed in what they could accomplish TOGETHER.

That brings me to something I frequently share with the business owners I work with: The culture of your organization will never consistently outperform the leadership that’s developing it.

If your team lacks accountability, examine how accountability is being established. If your people don’t understand what winning looks like, evaluate how clearly you’ve communicated expectations. And if your organization depends on you to solve every problem, ask yourself whether you’re truly developing leaders or simply creating more followers.

Great leaders don’t just motivate people. They establish clarity, develop others, and create an environment where people take ownership of the outcome. The Brewers didn’t suddenly become a championship-caliber team in October. They spent an entire season developing the habits, confidence, and consistency required to compete. That’s exactly how great businesses are built.

YOUR PAYROLL IS NOT YOUR SCOREBOARD.

I’ve seen firsthand business owners generating $750,000 annually who operate with more discipline than some organizations doing $10
million. The difference isn’t always resources. It’s how effectively those resources are being led.

Growth is a wonderful thing, but growth without leadership development, accountability, and cultural alignment can create an organization that’s simply bigger, not necessarily better. Revenue tells me how big your company is. Profitability, consistency, and people development tell me how well it’s being led.

And before you start looking outside your organization for your next superstar, ask yourself whether you’re fully developing the people already on your team. Sometimes your next great leader is already on your payroll. They just haven’t been given the clarity, coaching,
accountability, or opportunity to become who they’re capable of being. As leaders, that’s our responsibility.

THE FINAL INNING.

The Dodgers are an incredible organization, and investing in great talent absolutely matters. But the Brewers reminded us that having more resources than your competition doesn’t guarantee you’re going to outperform them. The same is true in business.

You can buy equipment, facilities, the best technology, experience, and talent. But you cannot simply write a check and purchase a championship culture. That has to be built through intentional leadership, clear expectations, accountability, and people who genuinely believe in the mission.

So the next time you find yourself comparing your business to the bigger competitor down the road, remember the Milwaukee Brewers. And ask yourself one final question: Are you trying to assemble the most impressive roster in your industry, or are you developing a TEAM that knows how to WIN?

Because those are two very different things.

Imagine spending nearly $340 million to assemble one of the most talented teams in professional baseball.
