But if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence.” — Vince Lombardi

I love to talk about personal growth. It’s one of my God gifted duties to see that everybody around me pushes to be the best version of themselves. It’s because I know that before you can lead and help others grow, you must start with yourself first. I have seen firsthand how effectively a life committed to continual personal growth produces results beyond our wildest dreams! Before anyone is ready to learn how we can grow as leaders, we need to embrace the “why”. If you don’t know “why”, you’ll never be able to effectively figure out the “how”.

There are several great reasons to pursue growth in this life. I know it seems like a topic “why wouldn’t anybody wan’t to grow”? Trust me, there are plenty of arrogant, prideful, and hard-hearted individuals in all of our lives that think they have it all figured out!

Here is where continuous growth comes in. Growth creates positive momentum — which encourages more growth. And an emphasis on growing – rather than “arriving” – makes it easier to learn from our failures and our calamities. But there is one key reason to pursue growth that I want to discuss on this teaching. I encourage you to pursue a lifetime of growth not just because it will make us better, or open new doors. But because when we as leaders get better, EVERYBODY around us gets better!

Growth in the natural world is all about looking forward. A sapling becomes a mighty oak by growing slowly over time. An infant grows into a child, who eventually becomes an adult. Planting the seed of growth is not a complicated thing. It’s as simple as a change in mindset. When we decide to believe that growth is possible, and commit to pursuing it, the change in focus is only the first step, but it can be the beginning of a long and rewarding journey!

Choosing to always grow is important – But that decision is not enough to create change on its own. Never forget that growth is a gradual process – that in fact, it happens one small day at a time. And then we need to establish the habit of growing on a consistent basis. It’s NEVER-ENDING!

With each small step taken every day, you make progress toward improving yourself and everybody around you. When we take small steps of growth every day, over time, we see progress. And then our hope has the most potential to be realized. If you string together enough days of consistent growth, you begin to change as a person. You become better, stronger, more skilled, and honestly, all of the above. And when you change yourself, you can change your circumstances. This begins a cycle of growth, leading to more growth, resulting in even, guess what? More growth!

We all know of somebody in our life (or maybe this person is you) that has hit a wall, and all of sudden has found themself seeking things in life that they think will make him / her happy. Maybe that was a new house, a different spouse, different friends that bring on bad habits, a new job, shiny new toys all the time, whatever it is.. It’s because this person has lost their purpose in life. They hit some level of success, think they’ve made it and there is nothing better for them to come, and they begin the vicious regression cycle.

My amigos – The key from preventing this chapter of life from happening is to make growth a daily habit. Starting today, do something for yourself that will make you better today than you were yesterday. And then carry this into tomorrow. In all areas of your life – Your marriage, your relationships, your leaderships, your spiritual life, your personal health, your finances. Here is what I know… Personal growth has NO LIMIT! And you’ll never have to worry about burning out on it!

Growth is a difference-maker in everybody. Goals have a cap and will eventually limit you. Personal growth can and will make a world of difference to you today, tomorrow, and for the rest of your life! Where are some areas you know you need to start implementing this mindset? I’d love to hear from you!

“Perfection is not attainable.
