“There is a reason the windshield is bigger than the rear view mirror. Your future matters more than your past.” — Max Lucado
It’s one thing to make a decision to focus on growth in your journey, It’s another thing to let go of the past behind you so that there is no turning back on your dreams and goals! Did you know that our growth happens during adversities and calamities? It’s true! When we are going through a challenge in our lives, this is when we learn and grow at maximum capacity. Do you feel like you grew the last two years, or regressed? When everything is running smoothly, it’s easy to get into a “coast” phase.
Story “Burn The Ships”
Burn The Ship was born from an idea that originated in 1519. That year, Hernán Cortés set sail to Veracruz, Mexico with his crew. Upon arrival, Cortés’ men became weary and scared, with hopes of turning back home to their old life. As legend has it, Cortez had the men burn their ships, leaving no option but to press on! Their ability to retreat to their previous way of life was gone; their safety net had been removed. The burning of those ships represented much more than a separation from old ways. The same fire that set the ships ablaze also allowed Cortés men to complete their mission and be a part of something greater than themselves.
As we move through this new year, burning our ships on our past bad habits means there is no turning back to old habits and ways. In this world we are always going to wrestle with all kinds of different physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual battles. To allow great change in our lives, we must find the root of those struggles – our own ships that can be so tempting to sail back on – and burn them.
I challenge you to burn the ships of the last few seasons or on the things that might be holding you back from taking that big leap of faith to the next level and chasing your dreams! What is your “ship”? Is it quitting smoking? Getting in better shape? An old job that you left to pursue entrepreneurship that you think was more consistent of an income? Achieving your Goals with your Team? Getting a new job position you have always wanted? Getting out of a bad/toxic relationship? Removing toxic friends out of your life that are not pushing you towards bettering yourself? Growing in your spiritual life? And SO many more that might be coming to your mind right now as this message is speaking to you. If you want it bad enough, go after it. But it starts with knowing that there’s no turning back once you make the choice!
