“Mastery is the result of consistently doing the boring work.” – James Clear
Let’s get one thing straight. When I say “bore your way to success,” I’m not talking about drilling into the ground (though as a landscaper, that wouldn’t be far off). I’m talking about a different kind of boring – the kind most people wouldn’t post on Instagram. The kind of boring that actually builds a meaningful, fruitful life.
In today’s world, boring has become a dirty word. Everyone wants fast, flashy, spontaneous. But what if boring is actually the secret weapon?
Here’s a glimpse into my “boring”:
- I bring the same 2-3 meals to work for lunch EVERY day.
- I get up at 4:15 AM. Not just some weekdays — every weekday. (I relax a tad on the weekends)
- My calendar runs my day, not my feelings.
- My mornings? They’re literally predictable down to the minute.
- My daily focus? I double down on what I’m great at – not obsess over what I’m not.
And I do it all… on repeat.
“You don’t need more inspiration. You need more repetition.”
There is power in Repetition.
Most people are doing too much. Running in 100 different directions hoping one leads to a breakthrough. I’ve learned the opposite is true.
Success comes when you stop trying to be great at everything, and become unstoppable at the one thing you were built for.
I’m not constantly trying to “fix” every weakness. I’ve found far more traction by sharpening my strengths!
“Boring” Builds Confidence. The same routine builds confidence. The same inputs produce predictable results. The same disciplines create internal stability.
I don’t chase randomness for the sake of excitement. I chase results. And those are born in the boring.
But don’t get It twisted… My life is anything but boring. We travel often as a family. Our kiddos are in multiple activities. I have the honor to speak at conferences all over the country! We support causes that matter. My days are full of movement, opportunity, and impact.
But none of that is possible without the foundation: The reps. The rhythms. The stuff that isn’t glamorous — but is absolutely non-negotiable.
Most people want the outcome of a focused life without the discipline it takes to live one.
1) They want the adventure without the structure.
2) The impact without the repetition.
3) The highlight reel without the behind-the-scenes grind and intentionality!
This is your permission to be a bit… boring!
- You don’t need to be everywhere.
- You don’t need to say yes to everything.
- You don’t need 17 hobbies and 42 new habits.
You need consistency. You need focus. You need to commit to the mundane.
“Discipline is choosing what you want most over what you want now.”
Because the truth is: “Boring” is where the breakthroughs live. That’s where the depth is built. That’s where clarity sharpens. That’s where you become a force.
So go ahead – bore your way to being the leader you were called to be!
Do the reps when no one’s watching. And watch how “boring” becomes a life and leadership full of meaning, margin, and impact.
So now, if you’ll excuse me…
I’ve got my salad for my lunch (my epic wife made it for me), my alarm is already set for tomorrow, and I’m heading into another good old “boring” day filled with systems, structure, and the same handful of disciplines.
It won’t look flashy.
It won’t be trendy.
But it’s changing lives – including mine.
Because boring isn’t the enemy of greatness. It’s the blueprint.
“Successful people do consistently what others do occasionally.”
