“It was the worst day we have ever seen, but it brought out the best in all of us.” — Senator John Kerry
As we remember the events that took place September 11, 2001, let’s honor the heroic actions of the firefighters who displayed exemplary leadership in the face of an unimaginable adversity. Their bravery, selflessness, and teamwork serve as enduring examples of effective leadership.
This past weekend, we were in New York City to celebrate my daughter’s 13th birthday present (a weekend in the city and a night on Broadway). Friday night when we first got into town, there were fire trucks outside of our hotel. Not knowing what was going on, we took a closer look from outside only to learn that a construction worker across the street had taken a long fall into the foundation hole he was working above. For about an hour, we couldn’t leave the scene as we watched the NYFD perform incredible rescue efforts, using a ladder truck and ropes to lift the wounded man from the pit area. The teamwork and communication amongst the firefighters in the down pouring rain, and the heroic work left us with goosebumps as we watched on to them pulling the man from the hole! As we commemorate these incredible first responders, it is easy to extract valuable leadership lessons that we can apply in our own lives!
