“Motivation gets you going. Discipline keeps you growing.”
– John C. Maxwell
Let’s get real today. Passion grabs attention. It’s that fire in your gut that gets you out of bed for a fleeting burst of energy. But here’s the hard truth: passion alone doesn’t build anything that lasts.
Passion is hit and miss. Some days, it’s there. Some days, it’s not. And when it’s not, most people give themselves permission to skip the work. That’s why passion without discipline is like a sports car with no gas – looks fast, but goes nowhere!
Discipline, on the other hand? Discipline is kind of quiet, relentless, and unyielding. Discipline shows up even when you don’t feel like it. Discipline makes you do the things that suck today but pay dividends tomorrow. Discipline is how you actually win in business, in leadership, and honestly, in life.
You can build a brand on passion, but only discipline builds a business.
Take mornings for me, for example. My alarm goes off at 4:10 a.m. Every. Single. Weekday. Do I feel passionate about getting up? No. Not at all. But I get up anyway. I dive into the Word, read, journal, blog, I get a workout in, I set the tone for my day. By doing that, I’m already telling myself first thing in the morning: “I’m a disciplined leader.” That mindset carries through the day, influencing decisions, interactions, and results. Discipline starts there – before breakfast, before email, before anyone else needs anything from me.
Let me give you a business example…
A few months ago, our fleet manager told me, “Sam, we need a few new trucks in the fleet. This is urgent.” Guess what I did? I jumped on it. Phone calls, research, negotiations – I got that shizz done. Why? Because discipline doesn’t wait for the mood to strike. Other days? I’m staring at budgets, cash flow spreadsheets, and operational numbers – things I don’t feel like touching. And yet, I force myself to work on them because I know our business and team depend on it. Passion might get you excited to sell a job(or in the case of this story, secure new equipment), but discipline keeps the lights on, the payroll and growth funded, and the team moving forward.
Here’s the real kicker: discipline compounds. Every time you do the hard, unglamorous work when you don’t feel like it, you’re building habits, momentum, and credibility. Passion might get you started – but discipline finishes the race.
A few key takeaway lessons to note. (Put these on a sticky note on your dash or computer monitor)
Discipline beats passion every time. Don’t wait to “feel like it.” Action creates momentum.
Show up when it’s uncomfortable. The work that sucks today is what sets you up for tomorrow’s wins.
Start with yourself first. Hit the disciplined morning routine – Word, Workout, Reflection, Goal Setting so that your mindset leads the day.
Discipline compounds. One consistent decision to do what needs to be done multiplies results over time.
Lead by example. When your team sees you disciplined, they’ll mirror it. Passion motivates, but discipline builds culture.
Think about the areas of your life and business where you’re waiting for passion to strike. Where are you letting the hit and miss energy of motivation dictate results? Your team, your clients, your family, they don’t care about your feelings at 4:30-5am, or whether you feel like managing a difficult budget, or stepping in to solve a critical issue. What matters is that you show up consistently. Every day. Whether you feel like it or not. That’s what separates great leaders from dreamers.
I’ll tie a bow with this… Passion is a spark. Discipline is a flame. Sparks fade. Flames last. Discipline feels like work – but it builds everything that passion can’t. Your legacy, your culture, your business, your influence… it all comes down to what you do when no one is watching and you don’t feel like it.
You can wait for passion to hit, or you can own your day. Discipline isn’t exciting. It isn’t glamorous. But it’s unstoppable. And at the end of the day, it’s what makes you a leader worth following, a business worth scaling, and an incredible life worth living.
“Discipline equals freedom.” – Jocko Willink
